Two years have passed since the OMI studio received an order to make a copy of Michelangelo’s famous Pieta. As the art director of the OMI studio Bogdan Kazachenko noted, there are many copies of the Pieta, but there are only a few good ones, and the masters of art unification have set themselves the task of becoming one of them.
Today, a copy of the famous sculpture by Michelangelo has already been installed at the Goloskovsky cemetery in Lviv.
The image of the Mother of God with the dead Christ lying on her lap is one of the most complex and iconic works of the OMI studio. The creation of the sculptural composition took 36 tons of sandstone and 3 tons of marble - the block was delivered to the OMI workshop from Italy, from the Carrara quarry, it was from here that Michelangelo took the material for his sculptures about 500 years ago.
“The life-size copy of the Pieta is a marble “pearl” of the tombstone composition. The “shell” is sandstone: on one side there is a tombstone, on the other there is a covering installed on supports, thus creating a worthy frame and protection for the sculpture, as well as a cozy place for visiting the deceased,” said Bogdan Kazachenko.
During the construction, technology was used that was used in earlier times in the construction of cathedrals: in the workshop, the component sandstone elements were ground accordingly and assembled on site according to the Lego principle - side to side. The end result is a complete composition that will last for centuries.
“This work is a vivid example of the coherence of the team of masters of the OMI studio.” The customer came to us with an idea.
We took care of everything else: the designers worked on creating a design project for the sculptural composition; sculptors - selection and work with materials. Design, calculation of loads, delivery, installation, installation - all this was carried out by the masters of the OMI studio.
The result is a truly exclusive work, which has no analogues in Ukraine,” noted the art director of the OMI studio.
