By order of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, with the support of patrons promoting the development and promotion of Orthodox culture and history, the masters of the OMI studio created a model of the first monastery on Holy Mount Athos - the Great Lavra. The model, measuring 1x0.8 m, is placed on a wooden stand and covered with a dome made of tempered glass 8 mm thick. An exact copy of the Great Lavra on a scale of 1:500 is installed in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Museum, and everyone has the opportunity to see with their own eyes the life of the Holy Monastery. The masters of the OMI studio completely recreated the landscape design with all the lands and outbuildings of the monastery, and simulated the life of the monks on Mount Athos.
“The difficulty of making this model was that its buildings were erected chaotically over time, without any drawings or plans. Accordingly, in order to recreate the monastery exactly like the original, we had to work mainly with photographs. Any designer, modeler, or architect will understand how difficult this is. I will say without false modesty that no one makes mock-ups of such complexity in Ukraine. Despite our vast experience in creating layouts of varying complexity, we had to tinker. It took about 3 months to create the layout, with most of the time spent creating a 3D computer model. But the result was worth it - both the customer and the craftsmen themselves were delighted with the result,” Bogdan Kazachenko, art director of the OMI studio, shared his impressions.
Only durable materials were used to make the layout: PVC, acrylics, shavings, foam rubber. Most of the details of the monastery and landscaping elements are 3D printed, assembled into a single composition and painted by hand. The artists of the OMI studio, using various artistic techniques, imitated the antiquity of the walls of the model - the main temple of the Lavra is considered the first cathedral on Mount Athos, built in 963.
Previously, by order of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation for the Museum of Orthodox Culture, the masters of the OMI studio made a model of Holy Mount Athos (1:1000) with all its monasteries and infrastructure.
